Longmire Season 6 Will Be Its Last

Modern Western series Longmire inspires the kind of fan fervor that’s typically associated with more lively genres. Centering on the simple, but deceptively brilliant Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire played by (Australian actor) Robert Taylor, Longmire tapped into an audience seeking the stoic heroes of yesteryear, boosted by a colorful mix of characters and a heretofore unrepresented dynamic of Native American reservations. However, the ride will soon end.

In a bit of a good-news/bad-news scenario for Longmire fans, Netflix has announced its Season 6 renewal with the caveat that the upcoming 10-episode outing will be the show’s last. For the show’s beleaguered fans, the news will certainly resonate as bittersweet, since the annual tradition of waiting for news of its fate has always been a suspenseful process. Longmire first arrived on A&E in 2012 and, despite solid ratings and fan enthusiasm, was cancelled in 2014 after Season 3. However, Netflix became the show’s boon, subsequently picking it up, turning it into an annual binge event. As executive producers Greer Shephard, Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny state in the announcement:

"We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to compose a closing chapter for these beloved characters that inspires lasting memories. Most importantly, we’re committed to delivering a dynamic and satisfying conclusion to our fans that rewards their longtime loyalty.”

Netflix pays back the showrunners' compliments, following up on their Season 6 aspirations, stating:

“We are proud to be the home of the Longmire series, as so many viewers over the last few seasons have watched and been captivated by Walt’s journey. There has been no better team to work with on this show than Greer, Hunt and John, and their tremendous cast and crew, and we have every confidence that they will have a satisfying conclusion to this revered series.”

Originally based on the novel series by Craig Johnson, Longmire has delivered an interesting and tumultuous arc for Robert Taylor’s strong, silent sheriff with the heart of a poet. The recently-released Season 5 left things with multiple cliffhanger quandaries for not only Walt, but virtually all the major supporting players such as Lou Diamond Phillips’s Henry Standing Bear, Katee Sackhoff’s Vic Moretti and Cassidy Freeman’s Cady Longmire. Thus, Season 6 should prove to be a colossal coda for the series, which admirably made the most of its second life on Netflix.

Longmire will return on Netflix in 2017 for one last season filled with the rustic wrangling of wrongdoers.
