The Heart is a Devil and Adam Simon wears it on his sleeve in this Salem season 3 episode 2 wrap-up.
“Witchcraft is wishcraft, so be careful what you wish for,” Adam Simon reiterates the warning from Salem’s Season 3 opening in this exclusive writer’s wrap for “The Heart is a Devil.”
Mary Sibley was resurrected “for a suicide mission” on last night’s episode of WGN America’s Salem Witch Trial era thriller. “The Heart is a Devil” was written by co-creator Simon (The Haunting in Connecticut).
“Tituba explains to Mary that she’s stuck in Salem by the Essex tree and her mission is to kill her son, the devil,” reads the official synopsis.
“Mary goes to Alden and explains that they need to fight the war from different directions. The Sentinel puts Mary’s loyalty to a test. Meanwhile, Sebastian and Anne force Cotton to make a speech at the church to ease the growing panic among the people and Mercy puts a spell on Hathorne.”
Mary has apocalyptic visions of “what’s to come under the boy’s regime,” Simon says. He also promises that The Sentinel will look inside the prodigal mother “in a very creepy way.” The scene he is describing will bug you out.
Marilyn Manson makes his Salem debut as the bloody barber Thomas Dinley.
“One of the great new characters,” Simon giggles. “The guy that cuts your hair is also the guy who cuts off your arm, if it needs to be cut off.”
And Salem has no problems with cutting off anything, from cat’s eyes to overchatty conversations, which the witches can do with a squeeze off a palm. This is something Mercy Lewis has quite a grip on.

Salem “boldly re-imagines the infamous 17th century witch trials in colonial Massachusetts in a world where witches are real, but they are not who or what they seem,” reads the series overview.

Salem added Grammy-awarded nominated artist Marilyn Manson and Samuel Roukin (TURN: Washington’s Spies) to the cast for season 3.
