Drew Magary has made a career out of complaining about his frustrations with the NFL, pansies who’d rather watch soccer, the highs and lows of fatherhood, our country’s fucked politics, and just about everything else imaginable over at Deadspin and occasionally at GQ. As entertaining as those columns are, Magary is on the path to becoming a major name outside of the Deadspin comments section.

IM Global has optioned his most recent novel, The Hike, for a television adaptation. David S. Goyer, a name behind almost every D.C. superhero movie in the last decade, will executive produce the project and Magary will pen the scripts.

The Hike follows Ben, a suburban family man, who takes a business trip to rural Pennsylvania, and after setting out on a hike into the woods behind his hotel, he descends on a path into a world of man-eating giants, bizarre demons, and colossal insects.

It’s the second novel of Magary’s to get optioned for screen. Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Sinister 2) optioned his 2011 novel, The Postmortal, for a feature film.

Magary commented to Deadspin sister site io9

“Obviously, it’s great fucking news but I’m also fully aware that getting ANYTHING made for real is a longshot,” said Magary when we asked him for comment, literally by IMing him. “So I’m gonna have to work my ass off to make sure it’s good enough for someone to pick up. I’ve also adapted my own work as a pilot before and it didn’t get made, but I hope that experience helps me on this one.
