HBO gives the Duplass Brothers the keys to Room 104.
The new programming chief at HBO knows how to keep down production costs. Casey Bloys announced that Jay and Mark Duplass will produce a new comedy anthology series that’s set on just one location. No falling arts centers, no flying dragons, just Room 104.
The series Room 104 will center on the different people who stay in a single room at an average American hotel. The cast will change at check-out time.
“Jay and Mark Duplass are two of the most inventive talents in TV today,” Bloys said in a statement. “We’re excited to see what they do with this unique concept.”
“We’ve all seen stories set in seedy motels and high-class international resorts, but for years we’ve been fascinated by the funny, weird, sad, scary, absurd things going down in that corporate chain hotel near the airport,” the Duplass brothers said, apparently in unison, in their own statement. “That’s what Room 104 is after… finding some magic in the seemingly mundane."
Room 104 is part of Jay and Mark Duplass' overall deal with HBO that dates back to 2015. Jay and Mark Duplass, along with Steve Zissis, co-created the series Togetherness, which ended its second and final season in March this year. They recently premiered HBO's animated comedy series Animals, which returns for its second season in 2017.
The Duplass brothers will run the show on Room 104.
Room 104 will begin production later this year. It should debut in 2017.
