Doctor Mysterio will be played by Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black, War of the Worlds). He comments on joining the Doctor Who team for the special:

Last month, we heard that Matt Lucas will return to Doctor Who as Nardole in the 2016 Christmas special. The official BBC YouTube channel Doctor Who: The Fan Show has shared some further info.
“Nardole is quite different from your normal companion", Christel Dee said in the video below, after listening in on a script read for this year's Christmas special. (Credit to CultBox for spotting the video and reporting its contents online.)
"Most companions are, like, impressed by everything – and it’s not that Nardole’s not impressed – but what I like about him is he’s almost like an anti-companion. He’s kinda like ‘can we not? Doctor, don’t do that. No.’
“But not in a horrible way – in a really, really funny way. They make such a great double act that’s going to make for a really funny Christmas special.”
Doctor Who Christmas Special 2016 Story
This year's Doctor Who Christmas special will team the Doctor up with a superhero! The special is called "The Return of Doctor Mysterio," and it's written by departing showrunner Steven Moffat.
Said Moffat of the episode: "I’ve always loved superheroes and this Christmas Doctor Who dives into that world. My favourite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent."
Mark Gatiss spoke publically about the 2016 Christmas special a few weeks ago, describing it as "one of Steve[n Moffat]’s best ever scripts, absolutely beautiful". He later added, "It made me cry."
Pushed for details, Gatiss said, "What can you expect? The Doctor is in it. It’s great!"
