Arrow's "Eleven-Fifty-Nine" was a frustrating hour for a few reasons. It saw Laurel — a character who had been with the show since the pilot and who had grown to one of the more complex, badass characters on the series — die at the hands of Damien Darhk.
Even more than that, her death was awkwardly used, at least partially, to reaffirm the Olicity relationship. Finally, we were not privy to the promise Laurel got out of Oliver before her death. Thankfully, at least that last fact can be changed — and it will be. In season 5...

According to TV Line, we will learn in the Arrow season 5 premiere what it is that Oliver promised Oliver before she succombed to the wounds suffered in the battle against Darhk. When asked whether it was something Laurel asked Oliver to do or something Laurel asked Oliver not to do, Arrow executive producer Wendy Mericle teased: "It is both actually, and you’ll find out what it was in [the Oct. 5 premiere]."
Furthermore, Mericle said the reveal will "inform a lot of Season 5," which means Laurel's presence will continue to be felt moving forward. Could the promise have something to do with Detective Lance? Laurel's dad has been through the ringer and has little to keep him grounded to this mission to fight evil or even participate in Team Arrow besides Laurel's legacy. Did Laurel ask Oliver to not give up on her father, no matter what? It seems likely, given the importance of the relationship between Laurel and her dad, as well as the importance of the relationship between Oliver and Detective Lance. We'll have to tune in to the season 5 premiere, however, to find out for sure...
