First, a spoiler warning to the three or four Gilmore girls fans who haven’t binge-watched the Year in the Life return of the series: Amy Sherman-Palladino, the Gilmore girls’ creator, is giving a post mortem interview which focuses on speculation on where the Lorelai, Rory, Emily and the many men, women and dogs named Paul Anka, move on in their lives, so it begins at the end.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life followed the family through four seasons, beginning with the winter death of the patriarch of the Gilmore family, Richard, who was played by the late veteran actor Edward Herrmann. His middle name was Kirk, by the way, but that didn’t affect the gene pool. Lorelai and Luke lived together and Stars Hollows favorite daughter, Rory, was unemployable even though she could somehow afford to jet back and forth to London (“She’s flying JetBlue on a deal"). We even finally got to meet Lane’s dad, Mr. Kim, just because “we just thought it was funny. … He’s been there the whole time and no one noticed,” said Sherman-Palladino.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life ended on a cliffhanger. The last four words of the series were the ones envisioned by Amy Sherman-Palladino when she first conceived the show: “Mom. Yeah. I’m pregnant.”

Sherman-Palladino admitted to TVLINE that she knows who the father of Rory’s baby is and she doesn’t “think you can rule out anybody. I think there are strong indicators. But you shouldn’t rule out anybody.”

Not even Paul, Rory’s boyfriend. Oh, you forgot about him. Don’t worry, so did everyone else. But Sherman-Palladino hasn’t and he is a possible candidate. Although most Gilmore girls fans will be split over their favorites, the creator says that’s not quite the point.

“A lot of Rory became about Team Jess and Team Dean and Team Logan, and Rory was about more than her boyfriends,” Sherman-Palladino told TVLINE.

“Her boyfriends were wonderful and we got three marvelous actors. But the boys were there to support what Rory was going through in her life and what person Rory was at that moment. Romance is fun. I get it. Look, I was [shipping] Angel and Buffy. I was sobbing when she sent him to hell with a knife. [Laughs] I get the feeling. But I always feel a lot of people overlook a lot more of Rory because the focus was so much on the romance. And I didn’t want this moment to be about a boy. The moment was about, ‘Here’s what I’m going through in my life now!’ It’s an ‘Oh, s—t’ moment about Rory. Her discussion with Lorelai is going to be about, ‘What do I do? Where do I go from here?’ It’s not going to be about, ‘I can’t believe it’s this boy that wound up…’ So I’m not being cryptic. I just want to keep the focus on what the story point is. It’s not about the boy. It’s about her.”

Lorelai and her long-time boyfriend and longer-time caffeine supplier Luke eloped on the eve of their wedding. They had an impromptu after-midnight wedding with only those closest of the pair, Rory and her best friend, the drummer Lane Kim. Palladino says Emily, the Gilmore family monarch will be at the real wedding, which is set for this past Nov. 5.

“People are reading a lot into that wedding date,” Sherman-Palladino admitted, after TVLINE pointed out how close it was to the presidential selection. “To be totally honest with you, we did put it before the election, but [beyond that] there’s not a lot of significance there.”

The cynical Sherman-Palladino does give “us a 50/50 chance of making it through this Trump administration. I think that’s high.”

Oy, you say? Well, that is the funniest word in the world, according to Lorelai. Personally, this writer believes the father will turn out to be some lucky Wookie from ComiCon, as out of character as that may have been.
