Black Sunday is still five days away on tomorrow night’s Salem, but fans who have fallen under the spell of the Salem witches will be feeling it today. The season arc promised a devilish new beginning, but the hell of it is that curse is lifted.

Salem will end after Season 3. Personally, I figured Mary Sibley and her coven of cloven fiends were just hitting the halfway point. A series about the split between pagans and Satan should run to 6 seasons, right? The period series that told an alternative history to the Salem Witch Trials of the 1600s was the first scripted series from WGN America. Tituba wasn't the only one to see this coming.

“We knew this would be the third and final season and were able to craft an exciting climax to Mary’s transformational saga,” WGN America admitted in a statement.

Salem is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios. The series was created and Brannon Braga and Adam Simon.

“We are grateful to WGN America and Fox 21 for being terrific partners and giving us free reign to create a satisfying conclusion—one we believe respects our love of storytelling and the show’s passionate fans,” Braga and Simon said in a statement. “It was a magical experience to create Salem and we want to thank every producer, writer, director, actor and crew member, for all they have done to help us bring the world of Salem to life.”

Salem stars Janet Montgomery (This Is Us), Shane West, Seth Gabel, Ashley Madekwe, Tamzin Merchant, Elise Eberle, Iddo Goldberg, Joe Doyle, and Oliver Bell. Marilyn Manson was a recurring guest for Season 3, playing a barber who dabbled in baking.

Salem is a fantastic show that greatly contributed to our successful launch into original programming,” Matt Cherniss, president and general manager of WGN America and Tribune Studios, said in a statement.  “We thank Brannon, Adam, our talented cast and our partners at Fox 21, for entrusting us with their unique and remarkable vision for the world of Salem.  We also thank the fans for their loyal support of the show.”

WGN America recently canceled its atom bomb series Manhattan, also produced by Cherniss.

Salem’s Jan. 18 season finale will be the series' finale.
