The trailer for the Netflix debut of historical drama Frontier has Jason Momoa violently battling the fur monopoly in Canada.
After several years on the periphery, we are on the cusp of a killer career Renaissance for Jason Momoa. While the former late addition to Baywatch and co-star of Stargate: Atlantis still rides momentum from a 2011 breakthrough role as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, his stock is set to soar when he fields a crucial role as DC Comics underwater icon Arthur Curry/Aquaman in an array of impending blockbusters. However, he tends to bounce back and forth from television, evidenced by his starring role in the trailer for a gritty historical series called Frontier.
The Frontier trailer heralds the series’ U.S. debut on Netflix after the 6-episode inaugural season premiered past the northern border on Discovery Channel Canada. The show is the co-creation of executive producer Brad Peyton, someone who is certainly on the frequent contacts list for megastar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, having directed him in 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, 2015 effects-heavy Earthquake epic San Andreas, and has him booked for another Journey sequel and a 2018 adaptation of the classic monster mayhem video game Rampage.
Frontier is a dark, violent tour-de-force of gritty guerilla warfare taking place in 18th century Canada. The show's backdrop is full of political intrigue involving the historical hold that the Hudson’s Bay Company had over England’s Canadian territories, acting as a de facto government, strangling the fur trade and exploiting the indigenous peoples. Thus, enter Jason Momoa’s fictional character Declan Harp, a part-Caucasian, part-Native-American who can be described as the HBC’s most disgruntled former employee… ever. Sick of the colonial misdeeds, he’s retreated to his roots, becoming a mythical, super-stabby William Wallace-type freedom fighter against the HBC and British Redcoats.
In addition to Momoa, the series cast includes Landon Liboiron (Hemlock Grove, Burning Bodhi), Zoe Boyle (Witless, The Astronauts Wives Club), Evan Jonigkeit (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, X-Men: Days of Future Past), Diana Bentley (We’re Still Together, Tactical Girls) and Christian McKay (The Theory of Everything, Rush).
Frontier is set to make its debut on Netflix on January 20. Auspiciously enough, the series already received its Season 2 renewal before its initial premiere. Check out the trailer below!
