Showtime continues its aim to rebrand its comedy image by making a full series order for White Famous, the new sitcom series from executive producer Jamie Foxx. The announcement was made Monday, confirming that Jay Pharoah is heading to television screens again in a starring role.

While starring Pharoah, the show will live up to its name as it will be loosely inspired by Foxx’s own career and lifetime of experiences from coming up in the distinctly singular Hollywood industry. Foxx will be producing the series alongside writer and showrunner Tom Kapinos, who created Californication for Showtime so many TV seasons ago. Tim Story, who directed Barbershop, Ride Along, and the original Fantastic Four will also executive produce the series while helming the pilot. The series will be a co-production between Showtime and Lionsgate Television.

Foxx is also expected to guest star in the series, which admittedly sounds an awful lot like the set up Mark Wahlberg had with HBO’s Entourage in the last decade. However, this is by no means a bad thing, and might actually be a boon for the Showtime series.

The official synopsis below:

“White Famous will focus on a talented, young African-American comedian, Floyd Mooney (Pharoah), whose star is rising, forcing him to navigate the treacherous waters of maintaining his credibility as he begins to cross-over toward becoming ‘white famous.’”
