Writer and cartoonist Aaron McGruder, best known for The Boondocks and Black Jesus, is partnering with Straight Outta Compton producer Will Packer for a new alternate-reality drama project for Amazon. There is no word on whether Boondocks season 5 ever made it to that universe.

The as-yet-untitled series’ alternate universe is inspired by the success of Amazon’s dystopian series The Man in the High Castle. There is no word yet on what the storyline will be.

McGruder’ is no stranger to alternate realities. Boondocks firmly held that “Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the Devil, and the government is lying about 9/11." The episode “Return Of The King” imagined a world where Martin Luther King, Jr. survived the attempted assassination and woke from a coma in President George W. Bush’s second term. It won a Peabody.

McGruder is developing the series with Packer, who brought Ride AlongThink Like a Man, No Good Deed, Takers, Stomp the Yard and Obsessed to theaters.

McGruder’s live-action Adult Swim comedy series Black Jesus is currently in season 3. McGruder was also a screenwriter on Red Tails, and co-wrote the graphic novel Birth of a Nation: A Comic Novel with Reginald Hudlin. It was drawn by cartoonist Kyle Baker.

McGruder will executive produce the series with Packer and Norman Aladjem, who co-produces Black Jesus.
