The Leftovers Season 3 Plot Details
After uprooting the show from its New York setting of Season 1 to the town of Miracle, Texas for Season 2, The Leftovers is moving productionto Australia for its third and final season.
The new season of the show will pick things back up in Texas before moving its story to Australia for the final episodes.
Australia isn’t a random pick by the show’s writers. Viewers have been tipped that something was brewing down under when main character Kevin (Justin Theroux) heard that his father, Kevin Sr. (Scott Glenn) was planning to move to the continent. Then, Kevin communicated with his Dad while in limbo (if you don’t know, don’t ask) with Kevin Sr. confirming that he was currently in Australia.
Speaking with EW, Lindelof clarified the location changed.
“Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally,” showrunner Damon Lindelof explains. “And there’s also something about Australian cinema — it’s primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit The Leftovers, whether it’s Mad Max movies or Walkabout, or Waking Fright or Peter Weir movies.”
On the show's ending, Carrie Coon told TVLine:
“In my humble opinion, the ending is satisfying,” she assured me. “There are a lot of directions the show could’ve taken, and, I feel in my Nora Durst heart, that they chose the right one. I approve of the direction the show went with.”
Most critics found the The Leftovers bleak and a difficult watch during its mixed reviewed first season, but in season 2 the show hit its stride. becoming one of our favorite series of 2015. Hell, we even saw fans dressed as members of the Guilty Remnant protesting for a third season outside of HBO's midtown headquarters (just a block away from Den of Geek headquarters).
“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind The Leftovers for its third and final season,” said HBO President Michael Lombardo in a statement. “This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon’s artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season.”
Damon Lindelof added:
"As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring The Leftovers to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be."
Lindelof spoke more candidly with Slash Film, telling them that season two was never meant to be the ending for The Leftovers.
"I’ll be honest with you, that idea — this could be the end — was never articulated. I think we want to design every season of The Leftovers as a novel, as opposed to a piece in a trilogy. After the first season ended, I really felt like that was it. I thought, 'Okay, we’ve now adapted Tom’s novel, and we ended it the exact same way Tom’s novel did. I kind of get the sense that Nora is there, holding the baby in her arms, and Laurie is probably going to leave the Guilty Remnant, even if that’s not definitive, and, at the very least, she’s reunited with Tom, and Kevin has saved Jill’s life.' Kevin and Jill are all there, smiling, staring at Nora and the baby, and I could extrapolate what happens next, and I was cool with that being the ending. All these characters were in turmoil when I first met them, but now they’ve found each other."
