It’s been a while since 12 Years a Slave devastated moviegoers and awards voters alike. Even so, many remain curious about what director Steve McQueen will do next to follow up his Oscar winning film. Now, in fitting surprise for the director, his next project Widows is coming into focus in unexpected ways since Michelle Rodriguez, of Fast & Furious and Resident Evil, fame has been cast in the starring role.

Indeed, Empire is reporting that Rodriguez has been cast in the drama by McQueen. The film itself is an adaptation of the popular British crime miniseries, which aired in 1983, was written by Lynda La Plante of Prime Suspect fame. The movie is also being co-written by McQueen and Gillian Flynn, who previously received a Golden Globe nomination for adapting her own novel, Gone Girl.

Also already set to star Viola Davis (Fences, Suicide Squad) and Cynthia Erivo of Broadway fame, Fences will likely be heavily inspired by the first series of episodes in the British series, which told the story of three women who became widows after their husbands proved to be rather shabby thieves and got themselves killed during a crime. Consequently, the three widows, plus a fourth professional they enlist, will succeed where their husbands failed.

Rodriguez can be next seen in The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise that will feature her and Vin Diesel trying to fight a submarine with muscle cars. So a slightly different tone than a Steve McQueen film, then?
