Syfy is bringing an age old, familiar brand of geek to reality competition television with its newest upcoming series, Cosplay Melee.
Hosted by Community star and self-proclaimed "super fan girl" Yvette Nicole Brown, Cosplay Melee seeks to unite fandom and creativity in a weekly hour-long epic battle between four passionate, innovative cosplayers picked from around the nation. These contestants will "create not only intricate full-body costumes – but fully-formed characters that they must bring to life through their own realistic performance."
A panel of judges, including the world-renown cosplayer LeeAnna Vamp, and the costume creator of such hit blockbusters as The Hunger Games and TRON: Legacy, Christian Beckman, will provide guidance and criticism to the cosplayers along the way.

The key takeaway here is that while these appear to be original creations, the contestants aren't just designing cool costumes, they're creating characters that they have to embody.

Cosplay Melee is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for "amateur" (although we've all seen mind-blowing cosplays in the wilderness of conventions and such!) cosplayers to not only show off their craft and artistry to a television audience, but also learn from professional costume designers and makers. To top the icing on the cake, a winner gets to walk away with a whopping grand prize of $10,000 at the end of each episode.
"Cosplay is passion, artistry, engineering and theater all rolled into one,” commented USA/Syfy's Senior Vice President of Alternative Development and Production, Heather Olander, and indeed, we have high hopes and expectations for the participants of Cosplay Melee and the cosplay prowess they're going on unleash to us this week.
