Here's everything we know about a potential True Detective Season 3...

True Detective season 3 may be closer than you think. In an exclusive report, EW gleaned what could be the first rumblings of a potential third installment of HBO’s crime anthology.
According to the report, series creator Nic Pizzolatto has penned at least the first two episodes.
In a move that many fans and critics anticipated, it appears HBO has brought on a second writer to help Pizzolatto shape the narrative of season three. HBO vet David Milch (creator of Deadwood, John from Cincinnati, and Luck) has come on to work with Pizzolatto:
“The extent of Pizzolatto and Milch’s collaboration is still early days and not yet formalized. Obviously, Milch’s experience as a writer will be a key component, but for the record he’s not expected to serve as the True Detective showrunner (at this stage, there is no specified season 3 showrunner). Also keep in mind a third season has also not yet been greenlit, so new episodes are far from certain.”
The news confirms HBO's original programming president Casey Bloys insistance that True Detective season 3 is still in Nic Pizzolatto's hands, albeit with some fresh eyes on the new scripts. Speaking at TCA Winter Tour, Bloys said:
"I don’t have anything on paper yet but I know there are some ideas going back and forth. I don’t want to rush it. I don’t want to do anything just to get it on the air."
HBO's Stance On True Detective Season 3
Coming out of HBO's TCA presentation, HBO new programming chief Casey Bloys said frankly: "[True Detective] is not dead." The exec told the gathered press that both him and Pizzolatto are "open to a third season," but at the moment, "Nic doesn’t have a take [right now].”
This could also mean True Detective comes back with another writer or in a different form as the name recognition makes the series an appealing one for HBO to have around. “We’re open to someone else writing it and Nic supervising it," Bloys said. "We’re open to other permutations.”
With the unconfirmed addition of David Milch on the project, it appears Pizzolatto is getting the help HBO wanted.

In 2015, the premium cabler locked up an overall deal that will have the creator of True Detective in the fold until 2018. It was then reported that a new season of True Detective was still on the table, with Pizzolatto having the option to either re-work the creative structure of the series, hire a writing staff, bring in a new showrunner or go at it alone again. Regardless, he would remain an executive producer.
True Detective Season 3 Release Date
If it ever does happen, we won't see True Detective Season 3 in 2017. If interest and production picks up, and this is pure speculation, the earliest we'd see our new detectives would be winter 2018. Even that conservative estimate looks unlikely at this point.
