There's a new Scooby-Doo animated movie coming. Hopefully not a shared Scooby cinematic universe, though. Details here...
Full disclosure: this writer is an unabashed Scooby-Doo fan. I consider the entirety of Scooby-Doo: Where Are You to be a distinguished classic, but will admit diminishing returns from The New Scooby-Doo Movies onwards. If you let me, I'll tell you about why Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated is as perfectly constructed (as far as animated mystery solving canine shows can be) as any cable drama.
Hell, I didn't even hate the Raja Gosnell live-action flicks all that much. And while we're on the subject of Scooby-Doo movies...
Warner Bros. is about to try again with a brand new animated Scooby-Doo movie. Space Jam director Tony Cervone has long been signed to direct but now Mr. Cervone will be joined by Dax Shepherd as co-director (via Variety). Shepherd is also co-writing the screenplay with Matt Lieberman (who is also working on The Jetsons movie).
One other encouraging thing about this is that it includes Dan Povenmire, co-creator of the brilliant Phineas and Ferb as executive producer. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are producing.
Now, there is one mildly troubling thing about this. "Like countless fans, I have always loved the Hanna-Barbera cast of characters," said WB president of creative development and worldwide production Greg Silverman in a statement in 2015. Nothing wrong with that, we feel the same way. But... "As one of their most famous brand ambassadors, Scooby-Doo will take the lead in re-introducing this pantheon of enduringly popular animated stars on a grand scale with an exciting new movie."
If they're building a shared Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe, I'm afraid they might be going too far. No other details are available, but I promise you, I'll work tirelessly to solve this mystery as long as you promise to pay me in Scooby Snacks.
While you wait for more news on this, go watch every single episode of Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, the Breaking Bad of cartoon dog sleuth shows.
The new Scooby-Doo movie is due on September 21st, 2018. That's roughly the first day of fall. Perfect for some spooky mystery solving.
This is an updated version of a story that ran in August of 2015.
