FX has finally unearthed the centuries-old unsolved mystery that the new season will be haunted by.
Cryptic clues about what American Horror Story season 6 will scare us with have opened the portal to some terrifying flashbacks.
Buried in a proverbial coffin until now, the shroud on the notoriously secret next chapter has been lifted to reveal a ghost story that FX CEO John Landgraf says is “set in two time periods…but principally in the present.” Meaning, the phantoms of a long-dead era (hinted at by glimpses of the cast in costume and the colonial-era set) will be haunting the twenty-first century. Expect one word to be forever etched into your skull from this point on: CROATOAN.
No doubt the legend of the disappearing pilgrims has been whispered around endless flashlights and campfires, but spooky sleepovers aside, this historical enigma is no myth. Exactly how Roanoke vanished into the mist has eluded us since the first eerie rumors echoed off the coast. Croatoan, now known as the same Hatteras Island you probably won’t ever spend your summer vacation on again, was the only word ominously carved into a palisade before over a hundred colonists never again saw daylight—even as skeletons.
Were they murdered? Drowned in an attempted voyage across the sea? Sucked into a parallel universe? Nobody can be sure, but Croatoan has been synonymous with all sorts of nightmare fodder, from being scrawled in Amelia Earhart’s journal post-Bermuda Triangle to being Edgar Allen Poe’s delirious last word. The Croatan tribe had a creepy legend about the spirit of their island being able to transfigure anyone who offended it into animals and even trees or rocks. So far, no one has tried talking to anything and actually heard back.
How exactly this cold (more like frozen) case will be connected with the present is still locked up in the FX vault. At least Lady Gaga won’t disappear.
If you want to masochistically keep guessing at all the morbid details until September 14, all the Season 6 teasers FX has unearthed have now been compiled a mashup of nightmare fodder that may or may not give tantalizing hints about exactly how all those colonists disappear. Among the roaring chainsaws, shadowy figures, disembodied voices, crop circles and something that looks disturbingly like the DNA of Gollum and a giant arachnid was spliced together in a petri dish are actual glimpses of the new season and misleading terrors designed to mess with your head. Decide for yourself: which ones are fatal, and which ones are just a twisted fantasy?
