Big Little Lies Season 2 hasn't been confirmed by HBO, but they are exploring story options with novelist Liane Moriarty.

Could Big Little Lies Season 2 happen? At first, we thought it was a longshot. The HBO series is based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, and the show has already worked through that in its six episodes.
While the show hasn't brought in quite the viewership that some of HBO's other dramatic offerings have, it has a wildly devoted and vocal fanbase. There's definitely an appetite for Big Little Lies Season 2 if HBO is willing to try and work something out with Liane Moriarty and David E. Kelley.
More than that, it sounds like HBO is considering the idea. Moriarty told The Sydney Morning Herald that the producers of Big Little Lies have asked her to come up with some potential ideas for a Season 2.
I'm absolutely open to it because, once I started thinking, it was too much fun to see what I could do and to see these characters again. And there's definitely places you can go ... The obvious thing is, first of all, I think we could bring in more of Bonnie's story from the book.
This is nice to hear, given that Bonnie's backstory (that she grew up with an abusive father) was largely ignored in Season 1 of the HBO drama. Speaking about the narrative decision, Moriarty said:
My original reaction was what have they done? How have they left that out? But a lot of people have said that they could tell [what was Bonnie's true story], there had been little hints and that you can take that away. It's implied in her performances and some little lines. I think I might have preferred to have had it in there but I wouldn't argue against it either. It also leaves open the possibility of season two.

Moriarty said that Big Little Lies Season 2 would also potentially focus on Celeste's character and what her process of grief and (hopefully) healing looks like. Moriarty elaborated:
That's the question that's also a really interesting thing, when you've been through a relationship like that, how do you feel now? How would she feel? She's grieving. She's still grieving for the end of a terrible relationship and I think that would be a really interesting thing to explore. So there's a whole lot of different storylines.
Moriarty said that the cast is "pretty keen" to do another season, as they all loved working together. However, they would want the story "to be right" for a Season 2 to happen.
If Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are willing to figure things out with HBO and Liane Moriarty, and if the fans are vocal enough, it sounds like there could be a chance for a second season of the show. If nothing else, Reese Witherspoon is apparently up for it.
So, we wouldn't necessarily hold our breath for Big Little Lies Season 2, but if you're determined to make it happen, you should tweet at HBO as often as possible and let them know that there's plenty of interest in a second season for the acclaimed drama with the incredible cast.
