Emerald City Season 2 hasn't been confirmed yet by NBC. We take a look at its chances.
Emerald City Season 2 is far from a sure thing.
The NBC drama based on the classic Wizard of Oz tales was a divisive show — visually memorable, but with some storytelling tics that annoyed even its fans. It was the kind of show that arrived in what is usually a midseason replacement slot, but it had the production values and diminished episode count of an event series. Every episode was directed by Tarsem Singh, which helped give it such a unique identity, but Emerald City Season 2 is far from a certainty.
The series saw a steadily declining viewership over the course of its ten episode run, although it seemed to stablize near the end. Still, it's not clear if what amounts to an average live viewership of just under three million is enough to keep it afloat on a network like NBC, even accounting for the fact that it airs in a Friday night slot not usually associated with ratings success.
As of this writing, there has been no word on whether NBC plans to make Emerald City Season 2 happen. At the very best, it's numbers put it on the borderline for cancellation. If the network is feeling adventurous, and with the knowledge that it's losing it's other Friday night genre show with Grimm, it may give Emerald City another chance, but right now that hasn't been confirmed.
There's also the fact that the first season of Emerald City had so much trouble getting out of the gate, perhaps implying that it isn't a show NBC is particularly excited about. The series was announced three years before it finally saw the light of day. That's not a great way to hit the TV schedule. Still, Emerald City has its stans and, with that cliffhanger of a Season 1 finale, there are many directions a second season could go with this rich storytelling world.
When might we hear something either way about Emerald City Season 2? Pay attention during the upfronts next month when TV networks reveal their fall schedules. NBC is slated to go the very last day, on May 18th.
