Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Rock Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival with a little help from some friends.
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, the house band that was assembled for The Muppet Show, made their live concert debut this past weekend at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival. Backed by video screens showing clips, skits and a behind-the scenes documentary, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem strung out a 25 minute set of covers that included songs by the band The Band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes.
The band was joined by the Oakland Tabernacle Choir for the finale, a cover of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends.”
The band opened the set at the Lands End with “Can You Picture That?” from 1979’s The Muppet Movie and ran through covers of Mowgli’s "San Francisco," the Band’s "Ophelia," and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ “Home.”
Dr. Teeth was relaxed and open with his patter, spilling his love for the flower children of San Francisco, their home town. The band formed after a chance meeting in The Haight, according to the documentary that was screened between songs.
The band consists of Green-skinned and red-haired Dr. Teeth is the lead singer and keyboard player. Animal, the drummer, is the only member to appear in every feature film. He was the only member in the regular cast of the Muppet Babies spin-off cartoon. He is based loosely on Keith Moon or Levon Helm or Mick Fleetwood.
The pink bodied Sgt. Floyd Pepper is the left-handed bass player who wears the green army cap. Janice is a lead guitar player who also occasionally sings lead and acts as Nurse Janice in the medical drama “Veterinarian's Hospital.” She also plays left-handed. Her favorite guitar is a Gibson Les Paul with cherry sunburst colour scheme. Zoot blows sax, and is based on saxophonist Zoot Sims. Trumpet player Lips joined the Electric Mayhem during the final season of The Muppet Show.
Designed by Jim Henson and Michael K. Frith, Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem made their debut on 1975's The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence, the pilot for The Muppet Show. The pilot episode also featured Jim, a Muppet caricature of Jim Henson on banjo.
They played the song "Can You Picture That?" in The Muppet Movie and appeared in most of the Muppet movies and television specials. They also recorded album tracks. The late Jim Henson was the original Dr. Teeth and the late Richard Hunt was the original voice for Janice.
The band performed "Saturday Night Life" in The Great Muppet Caper and performed "Jingle Bell Rock" in A Muppet Family Christmas. Lips didn’t blow, but Dr. Teeth sang "You Can't Take No For An Answer when the band appeared in The Muppets Take Manhattan.
Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem backed Miss Piggy in The Muppets'Wizard of Oz. They performed alongside Miley Cyrus in the Studio DC: Almost Live television special.
They released music videos for "Jungle Boogie" (ft. Sam the Eagle) and "Kodachrome" in 2015.
