At the Bafta launch for Red Dwarf XI, writer Doug Naylor vowed not to write a final episode for the show…

Red Dwarf XI is almost upon us. Twentica, the first episode of the new series will be available to watch online at UKTV from Wednesday the 14th of September, and airs on Dave at 9pm on Thursday the 22nd of September.

Twenticais an ambitious, great-looking and very funny series opener, followed up by Samsara, a second entertaining episode that feels like quintessential bickering-in-space Red Dwarf.

During the swanky Bafta series launch, co-creator and writer/director Doug Naylor was asked by a member of the audience about how he envisaged the final ever episode of Red Dwarf might look. Here’s what he said:

“I don’t want to write a final episode. Seinfelddid a final episode and Larry David said it was a mistake, that if he had his time all over again, he wouldn’t write the final episode. I think the feeling was it was a slight disappointment. I think when people die you don’t often get any warning and you don’t know when it’s going to be and I’d rather we just go.”

“I was always a fan of the cliffhanger ending” added Craig Charles. “Red Dwarfhas often ended on a cliffhanger, hasn’t it?”

“That we’d come back and not explain!” said Naylor. "Some people get quite irritated by that!"

There's no danger of Naylor running out of Red Dwarf stories, he told the audience. “You never use up all the ideas. There’s a tonne of ideas we haven’t touched yet.”

There's more on the new episodes over at our Red Dwarf XI news page.
