Shonda Rhimes is calling time on Scandal. The showrunner and creator is ready to let the series go out on her terms as Scandal season 7 will be the series’ final season. ABC officially confirmed the news at its upfront presentation in New York. TV Line had the exclusive report last week.
“Deciding how to end a show is easy,” Rhimes said in a statement. “Deciding when to finish is quite simple when the end date is years away. But actually going through with it? Actually standing up to say: ‘This is it?’ Not so much. So, next year we are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our Scandal family: all together, white hats on, gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”
ABC is currently airing season six. Rhimes already has Scandal’s ending in mind, and Gladiators are likely ready to let Kerry Washington and the rest of the crew go. Scandal has hit series low ratings during season six, which was pushed to premiere in the winter due to Washington’s pregnancy.
The series premiered as a spring show in 2012 and turned its seven episode first season into a 22-episode renewal. It hit ratings highs in season three and four, ranking in the top 15 of TV shows with around 12 million viewers per episode at its peak.
