Gotham Season 3 Story

Fox just released the synopsis for Gotham season 3, and it is full of clues of what we can expect in the upcoming season, including "a realignment of alliances," Jim Gordon's hunt for Hugo Strange and Fish Mooney, and the "peel[ing] back of the curtain" hiding the Court of Owls. Here's the full synopsis...

GOTHAM (Mondays, 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) The origin story continues on Season Three of GOTHAM, and the stakes are higher than ever, as Super-Villains more ambitious and depraved are introduced, and a realignment of alliances shakes up the fight for power in Gotham City.

Season Three will peel back the curtain on the infamous criminal organization known as the Court of The Owls. With the Indian Hill escapees on the loose, JIM GORDON (Ben McKenzie) must take matters into his own hands as a bounty hunter in Gotham. He makes it his mission to find HUGO STRANGE (guest star BD Wong), the mastermind behind the horrifying Indian Hill experiments, and FISH MOONEY (guest star Jada Pinkett Smith), one of Strange’s subjects. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective HARVEY BULLOCK (Donal Logue) and Captain NATHANIEL BARNES (Michael Chiklis) remain at the forefront of the fight against crime in the monster-ridden city. Also, BRUCE WAYNE (David Mazouz), with the help of his trusted butler and mentor, ALFRED PENNYWORTH (Sean Pertwee), and former Wayne Enterprises employee, LUCIUS FOX (Chris Chalk), discovers there are still more secrets to uncover regarding his parents’ murders.

As the city sinks deeper into chaos, GOTHAM will continue to follow the evolving stories of the city’s most malevolent villains: THE PENGUIN (Robin Lord Taylor); EDWARD NYGMA/the future RIDDLER (Cory Michael Smith); SELINA KYLE/the future CATWOMAN (Camren Bicondova); BARBARA KEAN (Erin Richards), TABITHA GALAVAN/TIGRESS (Jessica Lucas) and BUTCH GILZEAN (Drew Powell).

Um, would we call Selina Kyle "one of the city's most malevolent villains"? I know that, personally, I would not. Especially if we're judging on a scale that plunks Gordon on the hero side of this morality equation. Could this be a tease that Selina might be going darker in season 3 or is it simply a synopsis' need to neatly sort a frankly insane number of characters into easily-defined categories? We'll have to wait and see...

Oh, and while we're at it, there's already talk of adding Harley Quinn and Killer Croc to future seasons of the show.

Gotham Season 3 Trailer

The first trailer for Gotham season 3 has arrived. Here's your first look at the madness that's about to engulf Gotham City next season:

There's another hypnotic trailer featuring some major clues about the new season. We see Selina and Fish Mooney strutting through Gotham together. We see Jim telling Harvey that "saving Gotham" isn't his job anymore. (Yeah right.)

We get shots of Nygma behind bard and Hugo Strange working through some kind of mathematical formula in what looks like a mental health facility.

Barbara and Tabitha Galavan are still close, while Penguin seems to have more power than ever, declaring in glorious voiceover: "GCPD is not Gotham. Gotham listens to me."

Meanwhile, Fish is building "an army like her," which could be what prompts Bruce to step up his role at Wayne Industries — and as proto-Batman. "I do this, there's no turning back," Bruce tells Alfred. Alfred agrees.

In the final sequence of the trailer, we see what looks like Bruce (could be Doppel-Bruce) wearing a cape as a shocked Jim looks on. Will this "Mad City" finally bring about the birth of Batman in Gotham season 3? (Based on movie vs. TV rights, probably not...)

Watch the trailer and decide for yourself...

Gotham Season 3 Villains and New Characters

Gotham executive producer John Stephens spoke to Comic Book Resources about which villains we'll see make appearances. He specifically mentions The Mad Hatter, the Tweedle Brothers, Talon (following up on the Court of Owls stuff from this season), and even Solomon Grundy! There will probably be more beyond that, too.

TV Line has more specifics on those potential villains, including one who “learns people’s secrets and manipulates them to do his bidding” (Mad Hatter), and a mysterious lady who "“who uses her sexuality to entrap men.”

Gotham has cast a new Poison Ivy, and it's Maggie Geha (Ted 2) replacing Claire Foley in the role. But don't worry, the show has a typically Gotham-logic explanation for why the young actress has been replaced with an older one.

According to Variety:

"Following an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, Ivy Pepper finds herself reborn, and one step closer to the DC villain she is destined to become: Poison Ivy. Now a 19-year-old woman who’s harnessed the full power of her charms, she sets her sights on Bruce Wayne."

This makes about as much sense as anything this show ever does.

We've got the first photo and description of Gotham's version of Mad Hatter/Jervis Tetch (played by The Walking Dead's Benedict Samuel), thanks to Entertainment Weekly. Hatter first appears in episode 3 of the new season, and will recur throughout season 3.

The Hatter is "a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her." Duhn, duhn, duhhhhn. Will we see Hatter's characteristic mind control madness affect some of our main characters in seaosn 3? Because that could be fun...

When we first learned of Gotham's Mad Hatter — aka Jervis Tetch — we learned that he would be coming to Gotham City in search of his missing sister. Now, the Fox comic book show has cast that sister...

According to Variety, Mexican actress Naian Gonzalez Norvind (Everybody's Got Somebody... Not Me, the upcoming Rebel in the Rye) will play the recurring role of Alice Tetch, Jervis' younger sister. Though it might seem sweet that Tetch has come to Gotham to find his little sister, Alice does not want to be found — in fact, she is running from Mad Hatter.

Alice was born with a powerful ability that she cannot control. While she thinks of the ability as a curse, her brother sees it as a gift — one he presumably hopes to control. Per Variety: "As such, she has spent much of her life alone, running from her brother." Sounds like a potential character to meet up with street teen Selina Kyle, no? Or perhaps the aged-up Ivy Pepper...

Alice will first appear in the third episode of the season.

TV Line reports that Once Upon a Time's Jamie Chung has been cast as Valerie Vale, "a crackerjack reporter dead set on uncovering the truth behind Indian Hill. Confident and dogged, she will do anything to get the scoop, and soon sets her sights on Gordon, who she believes is the key lead in her story."

So it's Valerie Vale, not Vicki? At least for now. We'll see how this one turns out. Here's a look at Chung as the character...

Carmine Falcone isn't around much anymore, but the Falcone crime family bloodline will live on in the form of young Mario Falcone. James Carpinello will play Mario Falcone.

TV Line describes Mario as someone who has "rejected his family’s criminal ways and made a legitimate life for himself as a well-respected, Ivy League-educated ER doctor. He’s kind, honest and trustworthy, making him the black sheep of the Falcone clan. But — and here’s where the official character description gets interesting — his arrival in Gotham will create major waves in the personal life of Jim Gordon." In other words, he's gonna try and bust up the romance between Jim and Dr. Thompkins.

The Mad Hatter has been cast for Gotham season 3. Walking Dead alum Benedict Samuel will play the classic Batman villain, according to TV Line. Mad Hatter, also known as Dr. Jervis Tetch, was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger for Batman #49. FOX describes the character as a brilliant hypnotist on the edge of madness who is searching for his younger sister, Alice, who went missing in Gotham years ago.

Gotham Season 3 — The Return of the Joker

We just got some more specifics on the return of Jerome, courtesy of TV Guide. The outlet chatted with Gotham executive producer Ken Woodruff concerning EP John Stephens' earlier comments that the proto-Joker would be back.

Woodruff clarified that, while Jerome won't be back in season 3, the "the mid to second half of" the upcoming season will "delve back into the mythology of the Joker, and characters that may or may not be the Joker — but more likely characters that are an amalgamation of what we'll come to know as the Joker."

Woodruff also confirmed that the laugh we heard in the season 2 finale when the Indian Hills patients were escaping was, in fact, Jerome's, saying...

[The laugh] was really to keep [the Joker] alive, to keep Jerome and that threat of the Joker alive. We wanted to make sure fans don't feel that we're completely done with [the mythology of the Joker] because we are 100 percent, absolutely not.

This is slightly different emphasis than those earlier statements Stephens made to Zap2it, which seemed to confirm that Gotham intends to eventually bring Jerome back. Stephens said: "It is 100% our intention to bring Jerome back. We're going to be playing it again this year and basically extending the idea of the cult of Jerome. We're building the architecture for him to come back."

Stephens added...

You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist. Setting the stage that if there is a Season 4, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth.

So, it sounds like Jerome might not be back until at least season 4 of Gotham? Although, given how quickly this show churns through plot, it's hard to imagine them holding onto any planned plot twist for too long...

We'll update this post with more information as it becomes available.
