Clash of the Champions was originally a TV event put together by Jim Crockett Promotions in 1988. It evolved into being a WCW fixture for nine years, acting similar to WWF’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. In other words, it was a free PPV-level show in the days when there weren’t as many PPVs and the usual televised shows didn’t have too many high-profile bouts. With the rise of Nitroand monthly PPVs, it became unnecessary and was dropped. Its final and thirty-fifth edition came on August 21, 1997.

As a WWE property, it’s more of a renaming of PPV mainstay Night of Champions. Same idea in that all of the Rawchampionships will be on the line: the WWE Universal Championship, the WWE Women’s Championship, the United States Championship, and the WWE Tag Team Championship.

WWE Clash of Champions 2016 Results

Alicia Fox vs Nia Jax

Results: Although Alicia Fox was able to bombard Nia with offense late into the match, Nia still stood up to it, dominated in retaliation, and won with a Samoan Drop.

NEW DAY (C) VS. THE CLUB

WWE Tag Team Championship (Raw)

Results: Kofi jumped out of the ring onto Gallows, distracting the ref so that Xavier could hit Anderson with Francesca II. Big E and Kofi then finished Anderson off with the Midnight Hour. The New Day's tag title reign will live on to hit at least 400 days!

TJ PERKINS (C) VS. BRIAN KENDRICK

Cruiserweight Championship

Results: After enduring both Sliced Bread and the Captain's Hook, Perkins was able to nail Kendrick with a fireman's carry into a Pele Kick and made Kendrick tap to the knee bar. Afterwards, Kendrick shook his hand, only to headbutt him to the mat.

CESARO VS. SHEAMUS

Best of Seven Series Final Match

Results: After a lengthy back-and-forth battle, the two destroyed each other outside the ring and over the barricade. The referees decided to end the match despite the two woozy wrestlers stumbling around, demanding to continue. The crowd chanted, "LET THEM FIGHT!" as the refs dragged a reluctant Sheamus backstage.

SAMI ZAYN VS. CHRIS JERICHO

Results: After several failed attempts at the Helluva Kick and an inability to put Jericho away with the Blue Thunder Bomb, Zayn was caught out of nowhere by a Codebreaker and Jericho got the pin.

SASHA BANKS VS. CHARLOTTE (C) VS. BAYLEY

WWE Women's Championship (Raw)

Results: After lots of close calls, Charlotte shoved Bayley into Sasha, who was standing on the apron. Sasha fell to the floor and the rebounding Bayley got hit with a boot from Charlotte. Charlotte pinned Bayley to retain.

RUSEV (C) VS. ROMAN REIGNS

United States Championship

Results: Roman nailed Rusev with a spear, but when the ref made the count, Lana pulled the ref out of the ring. The ref then barred Lana from ringside. Afterwards, Rusev couldn't put Roman away and ran screaming into a second spear, which kept him down for good. New United States Champion.

KEVIN OWENS (C) VS. SETH ROLLINS

WWE Universal Championship

Results: Rollins had Owens beat, but Chris Jericho showed up and put Owens' foot on the rope. The ref got knocked out, meaning that although Rollins hit the Pedigree, nobody was able to make the count. Rollins fought off Owens and Jericho and by the time a second ref rushed to the ring, Rollins turned around into the Pop-Up Powerbomb, allowing Owens to retain.
