The 100 is about to dive into an "environmental disaster story" in season four. Here's everything you need to know...

All praise the TV gods! The 100 is getting a season 4. The post-apocalyptic drama was one of 11 shows renewed by The CW back in March. Though ratings have held steady for The 100, it's still nice to get confirmation on the show's renewal.

Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season...

The 100 Season 4 Release Date

The 100 has had pretty inconsistent scheduling when it comes to premiere dates over its first three seasons. (But, hey, as long as it continues to premiere sometime, we can't complain.) Season 1 launched in March as a midseason premiere. Season 2 premiered in October. And season 3 began in January.

The 100 Season 4 doesn't have a premiere date yet, but it's not on the Fall schedule, so it can be anywhere from January to March of 2017. Most likely, we'll see it in January.

CW prez Mark Pedowitz said in a statement when The 100 (and a bunch of other CW shows) was renewed: "As we continue to further our strategy of more year-round original programming, picking up these 11 series for the 2016-2017 season puts us in a great position of having proven, high-quality shows to launch in the fall as well as midseason and summer of 2017."

The 100 Season 4 Cast

The remaining (as in: not yet killed of) cast is all expected to return, including: Eliza Taylor, Bob Morley, Devon Bostick, Christopher Larkin, Isiah Washington, Henry Ian Cusick, Paige Turco, Marie, Avgeropoulos, Lindsey Morgan, and Richard Harmon. The 100 writers room and cast have shared some behind-the-scenes shots of the cast and crew hard at work in the Vancouver wilderness...

Jason Rothenberg teased as SDCC that we will meet a new character in the season four premiere's cold open, one of "a couple new characters that I think people will love." Could the cold open character in question be Chai Romruen's new recurring role? Deadline reported that the actor will be playing Ilan, "a Grounder haunted by the horrors he committed under ALIE's control."

The 100 Season 4 Trailer

We've yet to get any proper trailers for the new season, but we did get a (rather emotional) season three sizzle reel and season four "teaser" at SDCC. Check it out...

We'll keep you updated with any new footage when it becomes available.

The 100 Season 4 Story

The 100's third season has arguably been its least consistent, but it is still one of the best dramas on television — not to mention a direct TV descendant of Battlestar Galactica and a much-needed pop culture defense of the millennial generation.

We had a chance to talk with some of the cast and creators of The 100 at San Diego Comic Con and learned some interesting tidbits about the new season. Here's what we learned...

The 100 season four will pick up right where season three ended, with half of the Skaikru at Polis and half at Arkadia. This will obviously segment the conversation Clarke will or will not have about the oncoming apocalypse.

Of Clarke's decision, Jason Rothenberg teased that she will be put in a similar decision to what her father went through on the Ark, saying:

There are various points of view in terms of should we tell everybody? ... Now [Clarke] knows that the world is gonna end, and she's the only one that knows. She tells Bellamy right away, but she's the only one that knows, and what is she going to do? Is she gonna do exactly what she was going to do in the pilot or is she gonna try to keep it a secret because she's worried about how people will respond? We play a lot with that, and there are others who want everyone to know.

Rothenberg teased season four as "an environmental disaster story," and one that won't necessarily have an "eleventh hour save," as is usually the case with other shows. Christopher Larkin (aka Monty) said of season four's main "villain":

We had a faceless enemy before in ALIE. Defeated her. But now there's an even greater faceless enemy. Nuclear war: Part 2. Radiation leaking and destroying the planet again. So it's a bit terrifying because last time we went to space and that failed because you run out of your essentials: your oxegyn and all your supplies. So, how do we survive now that we're forced to stay on the ground, and I don't know the answer to that.

Elsewhere in the cast, Raven is going to straight-up become an assasin this season. Marie Avgeropoulos teased:

Octavia's going to do what she does best this season and that is fighting [and] killing people. She doesn't take joy or pleasure out of it. She just knows she's good at it. Her peers are mechanics or doctors, and Octavia spent two seasons trying to figure out what she is. She knows. She's a warrior ... She has a giant hole in her heart that she tried to bandaid with the killing of Pike and it didn't. It didn't fill that hole, so next season you're gonna see Octavia become an assassin with a group you're very familiar with.

The 100 Season 4 Writers

The 100 may have a divisive social media brand following the events of last season, but they sure do have some fun, silly updates from the writers room — that also sometimes give us some clues about what to expect in the upcoming season. One of my personal favorites from recent updates...

As well as a rather ominous (though not entirely unexpected, given the nature of this show) update...
