The Strain Season 4 is officially happening as FX announces the new season... and reveals that it will be its last.

The Strain may only be halfway through its third season, but FX is already greenlighting a new year. That’s good news for fans. However, the bad news is that The Strain season 4 will be the last year of the vampire-apocalypse drama from Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse.
FX made the conclusion for the series official when the cable network announced the renewal Tuesday afternoon.
“We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and their creative team, as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of The Strain,” said Nick Grad, the president of original programming for FX Networks. “Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion.”
Cuse also said in a statement that he originally planned for the series to be three seasons, just as the original novels co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan were a trilogy. When we talked to him in July at San Diego Comic-Con, Cuse said The Straincould go as much as five seasons. Apparently that has changed again, since Cuse says he, Hogan, and del Toro personally came to the conclusion to end The Strain in 2017.
“After finishing the writing on Season 3, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season,” Cuse said. “We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic Season 4. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”
The Strain has been on the air for three seasons and follows former CDC hotshot Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) as he valiantly attempts (and fails) to stop a vampire plague from destroying New York via viral parasitic worms. The series also stars David Bradley as Abraham Setrakian, a Holocaust survivor who’s been battling vampires for decades, Kevin Durand as an exterminator-turned-next-generation of vampire fighters, Ruta Gedmintas as Dutch Velders, a hacker trying to fix her mistakes of having helped hasten the End of Days, and Richard Sammel as an SS officer who has lived through the ages as a vampire. The next episode airs on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 10pm ET/PT.
