Fire-breathing dragon men, ninjas, snake-themed supervillains, wrestlers with swords, and Lorenzo Lamas. This trailer has everything, man.
When the first season of Lucha Underground ended, things were a bit tense for the fanbase. It ended with a handful of cliffhangers and a promise of, “TO BE CONTINUED,” yet the future was uncertain. Despite the insane quality, the show isn’t exactly a big money maker due to the fact that it isn’t run like an average wrestling promotion. It wasn’t for several months until the second season was announced and it didn’t start to air until January of the next (this) year.
Luckily, season three’s fate was less harrowing. They filmed it directly after season two (the entire season is in the can, so watch out for spoilers) and only a week after the finale, they announced that season three would be hitting the El Rey Network on September 7. That’s...that’s not a long wait at all! Not only that, but it will last forty episodes, making it the longest season yet! It’s especially exciting compared to how season two was under thirty eps.
Now we have a trailer to get us hyped. If you’re far behind or aren’t quite caught up on the series, don’t worry about it. There really aren’t any spoilers regarding season two’s events, all things considered.
There’s a lot to digest in there. I mean, there’s the obvious craziness like Drago spitting fire, Black Lotus having an entire ninja clan at her beck and call, and Daga brandishing a sword.
Then there’s interesting stuff like Son of Havoc in a bar brawl with another guy dressed exactly the same. Similarly, a shot of the team Worldwide Underground appears to feature either two Johnny Mundos or a wrestler who just happens to closely resemble Johnny. Fenix and announcer Maria Santos appear to have a thing going, which probably explains why Marty the Moth is tied up and laughing maniacally.
Most importantly, there’s some new talent involved. Awesome wrestler AR Fox is in there, wearing dog tags, which suggests a connection with Killshot. Underutilized former WWE tag champ Paul London appears with his own team of weirdoes. Then Sami Callihan/Solomon Crowe shows up briefly at the end.
We’ll get more answers in less than a month. As always, if you don’t get the El Rey Network, you can also get individual episodes or a season pass off iTunes. There are rumblings about a Netflix announcement coming in the near future, so fingers crossed on that.
