Angels and demons both have to sit in the back on the season 12 premiere of Supernatural. Here is our review...

This Supernatural review contains spoilers.

Supernatural Season 12 Episode 1

Season 12, can you believe it? And there are so many new elements introduced in the first few minutes, it's off to the races in this premiere episode.

The introduction of Mary Winchester into the series will surely be a breath of fresh air for the dynamic in the show. I can already tell I'll be gushing over the minutiae of what she does episode by episode, and sometimes wonder what it would be like to have a Mary Winchester spinoff series. Ah well, that's what fanfiction is for, right?

But really, Mary is something we needed (and yes, she's the same actress since the pilot in 2005. Thank the TV Gods she wasn't recast). We're all getting a bit jaded on the hunter lifestyle. Even angels and demons have become humdrum episode-of-the-week material. We need that injection of new to bring the lifeblood of this show pumping again. Mary, with her hunter background but her naiveté in the ways of how the world is now, brings perspective to a show where at one point, it was normal to have an angel and a demon sitting grudgingly beside each other in a classic muscle car.

The British chapter of the Men of Letters is also an interesting antagonist to set for this new season. Being that we'd upped the ante in supreme evil beings the past few seasons (the Devil/Apocalypse, Leviathans and The Darkness to name a few) it's intriguing to bring us back down to Earth with some morally gray ladies in pantsuits. They show they can handle themselves, what with their method of hunting – which has effectively eliminated the monster threat across the pond – and in hand-to-hand combat, as well as some skullduggery with psychological warfare.

These chappies are certainly sinister, as they look at torturing Sammy as just another line item on a To Do list. Then again, as he so accurately stated: “I've been tortured by the Devil himself. You're just an accent in a pantsuit.” Even though the Ladies of Letters put up a good fight, Sam still outsmarted them, which was true to his character being able to think outside of the box.

I enjoyed the bit part with the demon recounting his time as a 13 year old girl. I'd try to quote him but it's mostly gibberish involving valley girl slang. This funny little scene did bring up that the demon's boss, Lucifer, is having trouble, hopping from host to host as they each burn out. If you recall, Lucifer is one of those fellas who can't just be in any host. That's why Mark Pellegrino's character was specifically chosen. Now Lucy needs to find a new vessel. Who will he settle on, and will this be Crowley's chance to regain his kingdom in Hell?

Season 12 is off to a good start. I'm optimistic and intrigued. I'm digging the girl power and the traditional quips between our favorite characters and their adversaries. Let's see where we go from here.

5/5
