The CW Seed is adding to its animated DC Universe with Freedom Fighters: The Ray

Following on the success of the animated Vixenseries (which is headed for its second season), CW Seed will debut Freedom Fighters: The Rayin 2017 and produced by Warner Bros' Blue Ribbon Content digital wing. The Ray has been a part of the DC Universe since 1973, and is historically associated with the Freedom Fighters, a team of superheroes from an alternate world where World War II continued on through the 21st century with the Axis gaining the upper hand.

The CW has been ahead of the curve with introducing openly gay or bisexual heroes, anti-heroes, and supporting characters on their live action superhero shows, none have been series leads. The Ray will change all that.

Here's the official word on The Ray, plus the full promo image from The CW:

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.

You can totally spot other members of the Freedom Fighters in that full image, including Phantom Lady and Black Condor. I assume the guy in the goggles is the Human Bomb, although he bears a bit of a resemblance to the Jack Knight version of Starman...that's probably not the case. Presumably, the guy pointing behind the Ray who we can't quite see is Uncle Sam.

Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (you may know them from all of the other great DC superhero shows on CW) will serve as executive producers.
