The perfect way to pass the time between Christmas and New Year's...
Is there any better way to mark the end of the dumpster fire year that was 2016 than with a Game of Thrones marathon? HBO doesn't seem to think so — and neither do we.
The premium cable channel will be airing all six seasons of their fantasy drama starting on December 26th. HBO will cover one season per day, which means the marathon will finish on December 31st, just in time to ring in what will hopefully be a much less stressful and depressing 2017. Maybe we'll mark the end of 2017 with a marathon of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?
For now, though, we have the bloody epic that is Game of Thrones, a show that British blogger Laurie Penny called "the perfect show for the modern age," writing:
Stories help us rehearse trauma. They help us prepare for it. You sit down to watch terrible things happening to made-up people and you imagine how you'd cope if that were you, or someone you loved, and even if the answer is 'not at all' you find yourself feeling a bit better.
Right now, the really frightening prospect is that the world is actually being run by vicious idiots with only half a plan between them who are too busy fighting each other to pay attention to the weather, which is about to kill us all.
So, hunker down post-Christmas, grab the comfy pajamas-and-slipper set someone in your family hopefully gifted you with, make a plate of some holiday leftovers, and watch six seasons of dragons, murder, and royal machinations.
If that seems like a lot of TV, it is, but also when you consider that each season of Game of Thrones so far has 10 episodes, it's not that crazy? Roughly only 60 hours of TV. And it seems like HBO is going to give you time to sleep between seasons, which is thoughtful.
